Stornoway Solutions – Bespoke LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) system for Artisan Bakery

Environmental Filtration Specialists have recently undertaken a full Local Exhaust ventilation turnkey replacement system for an artisan bakery in Stornoway.

Following on from our LEV thorough examination and testing the year prior, our technicians who travelled from Bathgate to the Scottish islands identified that the current dust collector was past its current sell by date due to corrosion.

The proposal from EFS included a full turnkey local exhaust ventilation project to replace all aspects of the system, from the hood connections all the way to the outlet. The aim of the system was to remove fine cornflour; wheat starch and other organic dusts used in the bakery. This was to prevent respirable dusts entering the working area.

Our team installed 1 new (2m long) ATEX compliant flexi arm, replacing the existing (weigh scale) arm, and four stainless steel extract hoods covering the mixing vessels. For this, we opted for stainless steel for the hoods due to their proximity to the mixers.

From the farthest point, duct travelled vertically, until it broke through the false ceiling and into the roof void. The duct continued where the second extract arm will merge into it, before continuing along (above the process area) where the final extract point merges. This main duct travelled the 20m required, until it reached the external wall and explosion barrier valve. The duct continued (outside the building), before turning downwards and entering the filter unit.

We installed a DCE UMA 450 filter unit c/w explosion relief panels and a roof mounted 11kW fan set, in the same location as the previous filter unit . We have also fitted 3 x AFI’s (air flow indicator), in-line with the current HSG258 guidance. As part of the HSE guidance, along with volume dampers to balance the system.

We have also carried out the electrical installation of this system, with a new control starter in location of the existing one within the bakery.

Upon completion of the install, and after a short running period the full system was commissioned to ensure the design parameters were being met, and to benchmark the system for future tests.
