Case study: Reducing Sack Tipping Dust Exposure
Process
Leading manufacturer offering a range of livestock feed for beef, sheep, dairy, pig and poultry. High dust exposure from sack tipping processes when in feeding of raw materials.
Substance Type: Mixed process minerals and feeds
Problems / Issues
- Operators of a sack tipping process are being exposed to dust levels. Continuous exposure of dusts can lead to long term ill health.
- Due to a flawed design of the LEV system, there was poor airflow at the hoods of the sack tipping.
- Continuous air fed RPE had to be used when carrying out this process
- Labour intensive housekeep was required to contain dust within the working area

Solutions / Improvements
- Supply and installation of 2 x cartridge sack tip filtration systems, including transition section for hoppers
- Commissioned face velocity of above 1.0 m/s of the opening face
- No requirement for RPE due to sufficient dust control containment
- No additional housekeeping required due to new solution
