Case study: Oil collection unit for open top CNC machine
Background
Our MoD related client approached recently us for a design solution to control airborne contaminants including metalworking fluid (MWF) mists from an open top CNC machine. EF Specialists provided a full turnkey solution for the application to ensure compliance with COSHH regulations to ensure operators are protected while working. The types of operational risks that can be encountered when CNC machining and the importance of controlling these risks can be found within HSE’s guidance note MW1.
Design considerations:
- Filter Unit and Fan
Due to the volume of air in the open top CNC machine, consideration had to be given to an appropriate filter unit and fan with the duty required to create a negative atmosphere within the machine when the doors are closed - Filter Unit Configuration
The client requested that the filter unit be installed beside the CNC machine. With a limited area to work with consideration had to be given to a filter unit with a suitable footprint. In addition, with the filter unit being housed indoors the unit also required a suitable secondary HEPA filter

Considering the clients’ requirements and the volume of air inside the CNC machine, EFS recommended the installation of a Argos pro-9000.
The design proposal consisted of a single run of clipped and sealed smooth bore Oil Mist extraction Ductwork from the Filter unit to the CNC machine, splitting into two hoods that drop in just below the lip of the roof opening.
Technical specifications:
- Substance: oil mist, neat oil and emulsion
- Air Volume: 9000m3/hr
- Main Fan: 7.5kW
- Filter Type: Cartridge
- Filter Media Area: 108m2
- Disposal: 97 litre tank
